Going for a walk this morning, making the most of the absolutely Wellington GORGEOUS weather, I came across a row of new containers parked along the waterfront walkway down near the lagoon. Apparently, they will be pop-up shops, over the summer, as a sort-of continuation of the Underground Market that exists under Frank Kitts Park. They’re very neat and tidy grey containers, and although I’m a…

Hi there. My name is Gloria, and I thought that I would answer the call for writers. I’m going to try and post on the Eye of the Fish for a while, while the other writers are on holiday. Lucky for some. I thought that I might just start off gently, with a post on dream beach-side houses, as that is what I would really rather…

And so it was, one dark and chilly winters night bright and sunny summers day, that the happy elves at the Eye of the Fish decided that they would pack it in for Christmas, once more, and enjoy a well-earned break. They grouped together and gingerly picked up the old Fish, and dressed only in their festive Yuletide swimwear, carefully carried the Fish across the road,…

It is a little difficult to know what to make of Hutt City’s proposal to create a conference centre. For a start, you have to wonder if they are really serious, and secondly, you have to wonder why they would want to knock down their best heritage buildings in order to do so. It’s not as if there is a shortage of land in the Hutt….

Its both hard to write something on Nelson Madela, and also hard not to. But here goes. He has little to do with urban life in Wellington, and therefore there is no reason why he should be appearing in this blog, yet, he is quite possibly the most well respected politician of all time. How could I not acknowledge his passing? Pages and pages of writing…

The Hutt is an extraordinary place when you think about it. An alien settlement on a far corner of the earth. Started by Colonel Edward Gibbon Wakefield, a chap not entirely free from avarice, under the guise of the New Zealand Company. A grand idea for settlement when you think about it, pushing the British Government’s hand into doing something it did not plan to do….

One of the curious things about the modern architectural world is the art of the computer renderer. A friend of mine once worked on a project where the computer renders of the building were surrounded by a carpark which contained only Lamborginis. This, despite the building being designed for lowly polytechnic students in a poor part of town, and highly unlikely to ever sight a single…

…and so the process starts again. Athfield Architects, and Willis Bond, have put in another proposal for the Site 10 site at Kumutoto, presently the site for around 40 slumbering campervans, bang slap in the middle of the waterfront. It’s not the best use of the site, although understandably quite popular for visiting tourists to have waterfront accommodation without the humungous waterfront hotel bill. WWL have…
