It’s good to see the Dom Post rebranding itself today as Te Upoko o te Ika – ie the Head of the Fish !! Great move towards Te Reo MÄori – but while they may indeed be a fish head, a fish is blind without its eyes. And we, my little fishy friends, are the Eye of the Fish. Just saying.
The Eye of the Fish has been going for over 10 years now, looking out at the things architectural and matters urban, all the time with a focus on Wellington. Started by Philip and Maximus, now mostly Leviathan, the Eye of the Fish is still all-seeing, but is definitely commenting less. New writers always welcome. While there is a need, we’ll keep on looking. We’ve got our eyes out, so to speak.

The newspaper’s new name – in full, Tu PÅ«rongo o Te Upoko-o-te-Ika – loosely translates to ‘the report from the head of the fish’, and was given to the newspaper by members of Taranaki WhÄnui and NgÄti Toa.
Wharewaka O Poneke Enterprises cultural engagement facilitator Neavin Broughton said there could have been other MÄori names adopted by the newspaper.
Te Upoko-o-te-Ika is a regional name for Wellington, encompassing Horowhenua, Manawatū and the Wairarapa.
But there was also Te Whanganui-a-Tara, which refers to the great harbour of Tara or Poneke, thought to be a transliteration of Port Nicholson.
