In a slightly surprising move today, although it shouldn’t really be any surprise to anyone, the Government has put out a list of dangerous streets – the ones where falling facades (bad hombres) could kill you. Watch out partner, it’s time to shore your parapet !
Actually, it’s a good move – we need to be more open about this and not hide away. We need to get into a mindset of strengthening. And what this list shows is that: It’s not just Cuba St. And it’s not just Wellington.
The joint fund will be used to provide a 50 per cent subsidy for work, up to a maximum grant of $15,000 for a façade and $10,000 for a parapet.
“Many of the building owners in these four districts will already be aware of the parapets and facades which need to be secured, but notices from councils to the owners will officially start the clock for the 12-month deadline for the securing work to be done,” Smith said.
Levi, is it possible you could perform the public service that Stuff couldn’t be bothered with and post a link to the full list? Your nation-wide readership will thank you.
Starkive – this is all that Nick Smith has posted:
https://beehive.govt.nz/release/parapets-facades-be-secured-38-streets
Try that one.
It’s just Wellington, Hutt, Marlborough etc in his list so far. Not sure where the buildings down as far as Bluff or up in Whanganui is…. Sorry !
For those Eye readers with links to the Hutt Valley:
Cuba Street, Lower Hutt
High Street, Lower Hutt
Hillary Court (being the area formed within Hillary Court, Vogel Street, and Treadwell Street), Naenae, Lower Hutt
That part of Jackson Street between Cuba Street and Petone Avenue, Petone, Lower Hutt
Waiwhetu Road, Waterloo, Lower Hutt
Interesting that Jackson St gets some fine tuning, whereas all of Willis St, Victoria St or the Pipitea stretch of Hutt Rd get a blanket over them.
@starkive,
I guess its because Jackson street past Cuba street is essentially one story residential, with minimal frontages hard on the road, goign the other way past petone ave its mostly one story 50s/60s
While Wiliis street has the stewart dawsons building at one end, and the blythswood flats at the other
