Togs, Togs, Undies

The Tip Top icecream adverts of previous years have not survived through to this summer, a great pity as their useful tips for modern living had a excellent mellifluous effect on the general populace. My favourite being the man in speedos, walking away from the beach – if you’re more than a block from or can’t see the sea, then no matter how good the quality of the togs – they become mere undies in people’s eyes. So here it is for you, in case, like me, you’re missing it:

In Wellington, of course, there’s really only one man we…

Wonders will never cease. According to the newspaper front headline today, Transmission Gully will go ahead, and will be announced today, along with the so-called “Improvements” around the Basin Reserve.

“Transmission Gully is expected to get the green light from the Government today as part of a $2 billion upgrade of State Highway 1 from Levin to Wellington Airport. Philip 11-12-09

On Thursday, the Council’s Strategy and Policy Committee voted — 9 vs 5— to approve the proposed changes to Manners Mall and Lower Cuba St. Today, the proposal was finalised at a full Council meeting, and the plans look set to be implemented in the near future.

Written submissions were almost evenly split for and against the proposal, while an earlier poll reported a pro-change public, and a more recent survey shows two thirds of local businesses support that plan.  Assuming these gauges were at least somewhat…

A story in the Capital Times has been intriguing us here at Eye of the Fish world headquarters, and I’m surprised no one else has picked it up. The Cap Times (with a nicely renovated website – good work guys!) interviews a “local businessman” who is unhappy with the Council spending over a million bucks on ripping apart the old Cobblestone Park outside the big red building of Arch and Design.

The man, who owns a business nearby, wrote back highlighting his concerns. He never received a reply… He says it’s not appropriate to spend such a large amount in…

It’s around this time every year that the Fish starts to get nervous. updated – scroll down for video.
The day of the jolly red Santa draws closer. Pagan rituals from ancient Nordic / Celtic times get rejuvenated into a Judeo / Christian mawkish theme park of false bonhomie and pretentious piety, while the whole thing gets overtaken by the corporate marketing budgets of NZ Inc, US Inc, and most of all nowadays, China Inc. We run around, buying presents for relatives we rarely see and really don’t like, eat food that is wrong for the season and hang decorations…
